Check of a condition of the battery, care of it and charging

GENERAL INFORMATION

Check and leaving

Prevention

At work with the battery it is necessary to undertake certain security measures. At battery banks always there is extremely an inflammable hydrogen therefore at all do not allow approach to the battery with the lit cigaret or other types of open fire. The electrolit of the battery represents solution of sulfuric acid which at hit in eyes or on open sites of a body causes serious traumas. Besides, acid corrodes clothes and paints. At battery shutdown always the first disconnect a negative wire, and connect it in the last turn!

Tools and materials necessary for care of battery

1-Obverse guards/goggles - at removal by a brush of traces of corrosion of a particle of crystallizing acid easily can get to eyes.
2-Baking soda - water solution of baking soda can be used for corrosion neutralization
3-Acid-free vaseline - put on battery plugs a layer of vaseline will help to avoid their corrosion.
4-The adaptation for cleaning of plugs/tips of wires - such adaptation with a wire brush will remove all traces of corrosion from plugs of the battery and tips of wires.
5-The impregnated felt washers - installation of such washers on each plug of the battery directly under tips of wires will help to avoid corrosion.
6-The stripper - sometimes appears to be removed tips of wires very difficult from battery plugs, even after complete weakening of nuts/bolts. This tool will help to remove tips vertically up without damages.
7-The adaptation for cleaning of plugs/tips of wires - one more type of the smoothing-out tool, slightly changed option of point 4 which is carrying out the same functions.
8-Rubber gloves - one more means of protection at work with the battery; remember that in the battery there is an acid!

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Care of the battery is very important procedure, allowing to avoid stops in a way because of its discharge. Performance of procedure of service needs some tools.
2. Before the beginning of procedure of service always at first switch off the engine and disconnect all electrodevices, then disconnect a negative wire from the battery.
Prevention

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

3. Usually OPEL cars are equipped with the batteries which are not demanding special leaving. It is possible to remove covers a banok and to add the distilled water. Latest models can be equipped with the batteries which not are not demanding leaving which are completely sealed.
4. Remove covers and check electrolit level in each of a battery banok. It should be above plates. Usually on everyone bank there is a level index. If level of electrolit is lower than norm, add only the distilled water and then close covers a banok.

Prevention

Overflow can lead a banok to electrolit transfusion during the accelerated charging that will cause corrosion and damage of the components next to the battery.

5. If the positive plug and a collar of a wire of the battery of your car are equipped with a rubber protector, make sure that it is not torn and not damaged. It should close the plug completely.
6. It is necessary to examine periodically an external condition of the battery on existence of such damages, as cracks in the case.
7. Check reliability of a tightening of collars of wires of the battery, providing good electric connection. Check each of wires on all length on existence of cracks and attritions of isolation and wires.
8a. At detection of traces of corrosion (usually representing a friable raid of white color) disconnect wires from plugs, smooth out them a special brush and again connect. Emergence of corrosion can be minimized by installation of specially processed washers which are available on sale in shops of auto parts, or by drawing on plugs and collars of wires of a layer of acid-free vaseline or suitable greasing after their connection.
8b. The wire detachment from the battery plug by means of a key - sometimes when corrosion destroyed a nut, for this procedure is required special flat-nose pliers (always the first disconnect and the last connect a grounding wire!).
8с. Irrespective of adaptation type for cleaning by result always there should be a pure, brilliant surface of the plug.
8d. When cleaning tips of wires it is necessary to remove all traces of corrosion (the internal part of a tip has a konusnost repeating a form of the plug of the battery therefore do not remove too much material).
9. Make sure that the pallet of the battery is in a satisfactory condition, and the bolt of a fixing collar is reliably tightened. If the battery acted in film from the pallet (see. Head the engine Electric equipment, describing procedure of removal and installation), track, that in an installation time on it details or other extraneous subjects did not lie. At a latching of a fixing collar do not tighten its bolt too hardly.
Fastening of the storage battery:
1-weight cable
2-washers
3-positive cable
4-fixing level
10. Corrosion traces from the pallet, cases of the battery and surrounding surfaces can be removed by means of water solution of baking soda. Put a mix with a small brush, let's to it stand and then wash away plentiful quantity at its finest.
11. The metal surfaces of the car which have undergone corrosion, it is necessary to cover with a first coat on a zinc basis and then to paint.
12. Additional information on the battery and on engine start from an external source can be found in Head Electric equipment of the engine and in Introduction.

Charging

Remark

Producers recommend to remove the battery from the car for its charging since the gas which is allocating during this procedure, can damage the painted surfaces or a car interior, depending on a battery arrangement. The fast charging with the connected wires of the battery can lead to damages of electric system of the car.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove all covers about a battery banok (if they are available) and close openings pure rags to prevent an electrolit spillage. Disconnect a negative wire of the battery and connect charger wires to its plugs (positive to positive, negative to negative), then turn on the charger in a network. If it has the switch, make sure that it is established in situation of “12 volts”.
Prevention

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

2. If you use the charger with a current more than two amperes, regularly check the battery during a charging to make sure that it did not overheat. Using the slow charger, you can quietly leave the battery to be charged on all night long after regular check within the first two hours. At a charging of the batteries which are not demanding leaving, certain precautionary measures (for example, use of very nizkoamperny charger) can be demanded. On such battery can be precautionary шильдик but if it is not present, address for consultation in dealer office of OPEL or to the electrician from a repair truck.
3. If banks of the battery have the demountable covers, each hour within the last several hours of a charging cycle check electrolit density by means of the areometer. Inexpensive areometers are available on sale in shops of auto parts - at their application follow enclosed instructions. It is possible to consider the battery charged if within two hours indicators of density of its electrolit do not change, and the electrolit in banks freely bubbles. The electrolit density in separate banks should be almost identical. If this not so, means, one or several banok of the battery failed and it is necessary to replace them.
4. Some batteries not demanding leaving have above built-in areometer having a window - the color indicator of degree of a charging of the battery. The usually brightly painted window means that the battery is completely charged, and dark color testifies to need of an additional charging. More exact instructions are provided in the instruction of the manufacturer of the battery.
5. If the battery is sealed and has no built-in areometer, you can check charging degree by means of connected to plugs of the battery of the digital voltmeter. Completely charged battery will show 12.6 and more than a volts.
6. Fuller information on the battery and on engine start from an auxiliary source can be found in Head Electric equipment of the engine and in Introduction.
